Etat des Lieux are collective showings where artists and audiences are brought together. Artists are invited to shape a programme during which they share their ongoing research or try-outs. Nadine’s role here is guiding and supporting: sensing which artists are ready to present something publicly, finding the right combination of artists around a theme, providing content and production support, and looking for the ideal cultural partner.

Etat des Lieux lands in BUDA at the end of October 2023. The artists participating are Caroline Daish, Mathilde Maillard, Emma Lee Harder, Isabel Burr Raty and Lucia Palladino. They take the audience on an (imaginary) journey along water, earth, forest. A day that aims to generate energy with song, storytelling and speculative science fiction.

She Shanties & Other Water Stories

Buratinas, a small solar-powered boat, washed up next to the Zwalm River, an unnavigable waterway. The Buratinas Captains on duty are Mathilde Maillard, Caroline Daish and Emma Lee Harder who bring a two-fold project to Kunst & Zwalm.

During their trip from Brussels to Zwalm, they collected and invented new She-Shanties (an English pun on the word ‘Sea Shanties’). A Sea Shanty is a genre of traditional work song that could accompany rhythmical labor aboard large sailing vessels. Only 2% of these universal songs are made by women and about 99% of these songs tell stories of drunken sailors, glamorous “exotic” prostitutes or women praying for the return of their sailor husbands on earth. Captains Caroline, Emma and Mathilde started to imagine and sing some contemporary 'She Shanties’, short and repetitive songs that would reflect their own experiences of a modern but inefficient navigation aboard the slowest boat of Brussels, the Buratinas.

From inside the boat, the sound piece & Other Water Stories plays. During their journey on the water, the three captains also collected and recorded the stories of the end of this boat, of the digitalisation of the canal locks and how it participates to normalise a water world. They do so by using and responding to the water environment and ecosystem as tools for sound and singing improvisations.

During the first and last weekend of Kunst & Zwalm, some She Shanties will be spontaneously sung and improvised around the boat. On Saturday afternoon, 9 September, schoolchildren from a local school will join in singing along the Zwalm River.
